One good story from 2009 and three campy ones from the early 80's make for an uneven but enjoyable collection.

One really cool short story can't make up for a pair of truly terrible features - a disjointed pair of hackneyed comic tropes (superheroes vs. time travel! and superheroes vs. magic!) that belong in the chemically hazed Disco era, not a modern comic shop.

An interesting parallel world story and a wonderful one-shot make up the first half of the collection which is completely ruined by an incomprehensible Bizarro story.

If the new 52 was supposed to be all about continuity what the shit is this? New artists are fine, new styles are fine, new storylines are fine. Changing all three at once - as has happened with the last two volumes - and you're not really reading the same comic anymore.

Following vol. 3, Death of the family, this is a whiplash change of pace. The Art and storyline are radically different and three issues of the comic - 18-20 - are skipped entirely.

    A) If it isn't Bruce Wayne, it's not Batman.
    B) Interrupting the story to preach about the people in the inner city for an entire issue is not entertaining.

The Batman and Joker stuff was good, but that was a single chapter in a 10-issue arc, not enough to forgive poor art, an uninteresting villain, underdeveloped alternate universes(??), and to many deus-ex-machina plot miracles.

Why? Frenetic and spastic storyline-jumping? A giant bat-dragon sidekick? Far to many heretofore unheard of locations? Excessive use of red print on a black background? These and more sins overwhelm the book and made it a chore to read.

Bad enough it's written by a communist who never served, but the air of smug that oozes over the whole production from opening essay to the biographies at the end is suffocating. One ...contributer... goes so far as to describe himself as a 'sophisticated intellectual'. Avoid this self-appreciating waste of time at all costs.
