Notes:

Item 1, top right:  Image of the Continental Hotel, at the NE corner of 9th & Chestnut Streets.  Built in 1857-1860 by architect John McArthur, Jr., it hosted many famous visitors, most notably Abraham Lincoln in 1861. The entrance canopy was added later. The hotel was eventually demolished in 1923. Reproduction of a photograph for an unidentified newspaper, 16 x 16 cm, c. 1923.

Item 2, left: Image from "Can You Recall This Bit of Old Philadelphia?," a regular feature of the Evening Public Ledger. Shown is the north side of the 900 block of Chestnut Street in the mid-1800s.  These buildings were razed in 1880 and replaced by the Penn Mutual Life Insurance building, which was then incorporated by the old Federal Reserve Bank building.  Reproduction of a photograph for the Evening Public Ledger, 8.5 x 18 cm, c. 1925.

Item 3, bottom right: Image from "Can You Recall This Bit of Old Philadelphia?," a regular feature of the Evening Public Ledger.  Shown is a former US Post Office building, on the south side of the 400 block of Chestnut Street.  As stated in the caption, the building is draped in black after the death of President Garfield in July, 1881.  The post office moved from this site to 9th & Chestnut Street in 1884. Reproduction of an 1881 photograph for the Evening Public Ledger, 15.5 x 14.5 cm, c. 1925.
