Original photograph showing a corner view of a three-story brick building, its gable end facing 3rd Street. Attached row houses front Spruce Street. Signage identifies the business as "S. Goldman, Wholesale Grocer"; accompanying poster advertises "Washburn Crosby's Gold Medal Flour."
Barrels sit on the sidewalk behind a fire hydrant. Across Spruce Street people gather in the shade of an awning.

The small square building, surrounded by trees and shrubbery, sits on high ground above the west bank of the Schuylkill River. Built in 1785 by John Penn, grandson of William Penn, the house's isolated position suited the reclusive owner, who named it "Solitude". Today, the house is owned by the Zoological Gardens who use it for administration offices.
