Notes:
View of the the old porter's lodge for Sedgeley Mansion built by William Cramond in 1799 on the east banks of the Schuylkill River. The lodge, like the mansion itself, was designed by Benjamin Henry Latrobe in the Gothic Revival style, and remains one of the earliest examples of the style in the country. Note the embellishment of the eaves with elaborately carved barge boards. Often called the "Father of American Architecture", the British-born architect is most famous for designing the United States Capitol. After the mansion was demolished, in 1857, the lodge was utilised as a Fairmount Park guard house. In the picture three uniformed men, one holding a bicycle, pose for the photographer. The building was converted into offices in the 1990s.
