Caption reads: Rau's photo of Philadelphia, from southeastern section of old city toward City Hall, showing the great retail business, hotel and theatre district; about 55 square miles of the city's area is built up, with nearly 400,000 structures; the real estate is assessed at $1,250,000,000; city debt, $61,620,320; 1,730 miles of streets, occupying nearly one-third of the city's area. Philadelphia was the first city in the world built according to plan, which was prepared for Penn by Thomas Lloyd, a London surveyor, who laid out streets from the Delaware to the Schuylkill and intersected at right angles.
