Free Legal Workshops for West Philly

By Harry F. RSS Tue, March 15, 2016

Are you in need of FREE legal advice? Last month, the Hot Spot at Heavenly Hall hosted its first-ever legal workshop. The kickoff session focused on expungements and pardons, with both law students and experienced lawyers available to help attendees traverse the complex, multi-step process to clearing their record. This newly formed collaboration with the University of Pennsylvania Law School’s Toll Public Interest Center not only serves the residents of West Philadelphia with quality legal advice, it also gives the law students the opportunity to practice working with clients in a real-world, meaningful way. We are excited to announce the second session, focusing on home ownership and property laws, and a third session that will cover all there is to know about credit scores.

Home Ownership
Friday, March 18, 2016 from 4:00-6:00 p.m.
Do you really own your own home? Many people in Philadelphia think they own the home they live in, but actually don’t for a variety of reasons including informal inheritance and undocumented family gifts.  Many titles are tangled, disputed, or just plain in someone else’s name. Patrons will have help searching their title, diagnosing ownership issues, and taking the first steps towards clearing title to their greatest asset.

Credit Scores
Friday, April 8, 2016 from 4:00-6:00 p.m.
What are credit scores? What do they mean, and what can you do about yours? One of the most misunderstood economic tools is a person’s credit score. Too many people don’t know what their score is, how it affects them, or what they need to do to raise it. While good credit can be a gateway to economic opportunity, bad credit can be a detriment so significant that it can impact employment. Patrons will work with Penn Law students to search for their credit report, analyzing it, and begin to address issues that they need to resolve in order to raise scores and gain access to increased economic opportunity.

Both sessions will be held in the Heavenly Hall Annex located at 4015 Poplar Street, Philadelphia, PA 19104. Registration is encouraged, but not required. For more information or to register, please contact Brian Isdell at 215-686-5372.
