Richmond Library Construction Updates

By Mark G. RSS Tue, April 22, 2025

On this page, we will have roof and ceiling repair updates on the Richmond Library every two weeks until the library is reopened. The estimated date for the library’s reopening is summer 2025.

April 22, 2025 - Today, the final tile was installed on the roof. And while the tiles are in place, more work in underway. On the exterior of the library, the drain and flat roof gutter work needed more investigation and design. Work will soon start to implement adjusted plans. Inside the library, the main level has been cleared out and plaster work is set to begin next week.

April 4, 2025 - Progress has been moving swiftly forward. The clay tiles are now being installed on the roof ridges, as the photo on the right above shows. The drain work and flat roof gutter work will start next week. The inside of the building is being prepared for interior plaster restoration. The plans for the interior work are being drafted. Overall, the work is still on schedule for the library to reopen this summer.

March 26, 2025 - We apologize for the delay in posting this update. The clay tile installation on the roof is now about 80% complete. Soon, work will begin on the internal gutters, the roof's edges, and drains. Planning for interior repairs is underway.

March 6, 2025 - Construction work on the roof has been ongoing. The previous tile has been removed and new tile has been added on the Almond Street-facing section. Crews are examining the wood and other support materials in other sections of the roof and making repairs as needed.

February 18, 2025 – Roof replaces construction started today, after a two-week delay due to winter weather. Over the next two weeks, the roofer will be working on installing the front section of the roof. We will have more updates in early March.

Thank you so much for making this page so we can stay informed about our beloved library branch. In a city where 52% of Philadelphia's adults are functionally illiterate, libraries are more important than ever to serve as a free public space where literacy and critical thinking are supported and encouraged.

Thank you so much for these updates! I noticed in posting the new photo of the roof, the old photo of the front is gone. Is there a way to find all of the photos posted/archived for this article?
