Changes Coming for Treehouse and Our Digital Learning Resources

By Jamie W. RSS Mon, December 15, 2014

Last year we announced a new digital resource for digital learning focused on tech skills called Treehouse. While Treehouse was embraced by some eager to learn coding and web design, we've come to the difficult conclusion that our budget will not allow us to continue with Treehouse into 2015.

It's always tough for us to chose not to renew a resource, but thankfully, the Free Library's Digital Learning collections are deep enough to keep supporting you in your study. Take a look at Universal Class, where you can take hundreds of self-paced online courses led by real instructors. Many courses in Universal Class even offer accredited Continuing Education Units. For those specifically interested in the cutting edge web design and coding courses offered through Treehouse, take a look at Code Academy and Kahn Academy. We refer many students to these free resources through our Digital Learning Portal.

If you are currently working on a course in Treehouse, you may choose to continue as an individual subscriber. Students and active military personell can join for $9/month. Treehouse offers other subscription options for the general public as well.

Please stay tuned for more updates to our services and offerings.

I just got an email about this from Treehouse and this is such a bummer. Treehouse is a great resource. Any chance this could be reconsidered?

I second Matt! This was one of my favorite resources that the library provided, and while Codeacademy is great for beginners, it's nowhere near as extensive as Treehouse is. Is there a reason the partnership is being discontinued?

Hello Matt and Eliza - we appreciate your feedback. We also think that Treehouse is an excellent service. It's both useful and aligned with the strategic goals of the Free Library. However, our budget did not allow us to continue with it. If we can add resources again in the future, Treehouse is certainly one that will get another look.

Teamtreehouse was amazing. There has to be some way treehouse can reason with you on pricing since their goals, with projects like Code Oregon, are aligned with yours and Philadelphia is a city that could use more coders.

This is a real disappointment... I was so proud of Philadelphia for offering such a wonderful and modern program through the library....Khan and Code Academy are nowhere near as comprehensive. Its seems like digital education the job training would be at the forefront of the libraries interests..too bad.
