Download Digital Magazines with Zinio and the Free Library!

By Jamie W. RSS Fri, December 20, 2013

With Zinio the Free Library is pleased to offer you free access to current issues of popular magazines to read on your tablet, smartphone, or computer. Your SEPTA ride to work just got so much better!

Here's what you'll need to get started:

  • Two accounts created using the same email address
  • Once registered, mobile users can add the Zinio app from their app store.

Here's a short video that walks you though it:

Zinio Frequently Asked Question:

How many magazines can I borrow?
As many as you like, there is no limit.

Do I have to return the magazines?
No. The magazines you download will remain available in your Zinio account until you delete them.

Can I get back issues of a magazine?
Sort of. The magazines in our Zinio collection will begin with Dec/Jan 2014 issues and go forward. However, you can often get back issues of magazines from one of the library's many other databases.

You have a lot of magazines here, but not my favorite magazine! What gives?
We would love to have everyone's favorite magazine. However, it is magazine publishers who decide which titles Zinio can sell to libraries. You'll notice that some popular titles on the commercial Zinio site are not available to us.

I have a personal Zinio account already. Can I use the Free Library version, too?
Of course! Go to the library's Zinio portal and create an account using the same email address you use for your personal Zinio account. Then checkout magazines from the library portal. Next time you sign into your personal Zinio account, you'll see both the magazines you purchased from Zinio and those you downloaded through the library.

I am receiving promotional emails from Zinio and I don't want them. Help!
Sign into your account at the Zinio.com site. Go to Preferences from the Account Settings menu. Change your email preferences to NO and click Save.

Why is Zinio asking me to pay for a magazine?
If you try to select new magazines on the Zinio.com site or within the Zinio app, you'll be prompted to pay. Instead, go to the Free Library's Zinio site to check out magazines for free.

How do I download a magazine to my mobile device?
Check out a magazine from the Free Library's Zinio site using the web browser on your device. Then download the Zinio app. Sign into the app using the same email address you used to register on the Free Library's Zinio page. The magazines you downloaded from the library will appear in the app's My Library section. For help with specific devices, visit Zinio's help.

I added the Zinio app to my mobile device and it's asking me to confirm that I am over 17. Why?
The Zinio app is associated with the commercial Zinio site and store. Zinio does sell age-restricted magazines. So, once you register your Zinio account you can choose to enter a credit card and purchase those magazines if you are over the age of 17. However, the Free Library does not purchase age-restricted magazines for our Zinio collection.

How do I delete a magazine once I have downloaded it from the library?
Sign into your account at the Zinio.com site. In your Zinio Library, click Edit your reading list. Click the X on each magazine you want to delete. Click Done.

Hi Donna - Unfortunately Consumer Reports does not make their magazine available to libraries through Zinio (it is available to consumers through Zinio though). If that changes in the future, we will be very sure to subscribe to it. Thank you.

I would love to see both Consumer Reports and TV Guide added in the future. This is a great service. Thanks.

Hello Rene - thanks for your comment. Unfortunately, neither of these titles are available for libraries to purchase through Zinio. While they are on the commercial Zinio site for sale directly to consumers, their publishers restrict sales to libraries. If they become available to us in the future we will certainly add them to our collection. Thank you.

I just got a mac and am unable to see the pages of the magazines at all, it just says missing an app. I am able to see the thumbnails though. I have also noticed on my old pc, that some of the pages are not loading also. This started when i noticed the format of the Zinio website changed. What can i do to be able to read the magazines?

Hello Lisa - Thank you for your comment. This is a little tricky to diagnose on the blog, but my guess is that this could have more to do with your browser rather than the new Mac. If you have an alternate browser, like Chrome or FireFox, installed on your Mac, please try reading Zinio there. If that does not help, you can contact Zinio directly for help here: http://fs2.formsite.com/RecordedBooks/RBdigitalSupportRequest/index.html

Hi Glenn, the library no longer subscribes to Zinio. Instead we have eMagazines from Overdrive: https://freelibrary.overdrive.com/library/magazines. Downloading to a flash drive is not possible, but you can read eMagazines in a browser or on the Libby app on your mobile device. You can contact us at https://libwww.freelibrary.org/contact/ if you have additional questions. Thank you for reaching out.
