Booze history with a bit of botany and a dash of chemistry for flavor. 

A layman's primer on the purpose of engineering and design, slightly dated reference-wise but still relevant 30 years after its initial publication. 

The intertwined lives of a trio of lovers, told more as three short stories than a single novel. A masterpiece. 

The name Dick Wolf sold me on trying this novel. I didn't know the genre, the plot or even a teaser/tagline, but with a track record of entertaining work from television I gave it a try and was not disappointed. In fact I was thrilled.
With a terrifyingly plausible terrorism storyline, an easy reading style, well-formed characters and just enough detail to keep the story real without going full-on Tom Clancy with the techno-jargon, I'm already looknig forward to more books from Mr. Wolf. 

A quality follow up to his first novel, the wooden female lead being the only drawback. 

I'm a sucker for fiction writers who use footnotes.

Fills in some gaps in past stories but really doesn't compel any interest in reading more of these characters.          

A nostalgic look at an all to brief era of entertainment.

It is a nice collection of photos, but a bit repetitious in its selection of locations, and the obvious captioning errors make all of the text suspect.

"...It was his fate to see the game he loved shrink steadily until it almost disappeared."

A sad oral history of a billiard player who lived to long and saw the game die around him. Sociologically interesting for the raw language and now (and even then) arcane slang.

Curious how (if?)they are going to fit in the acronymic meaning of SHAZAM when the new 52 origin story seems to predate the Greek age of myth.

Weighed down with multiple aerial shots and staged photos of players, some interior shots or blueprints would have been a nice addition.

OK. Having completed all four volumes now, They are NOT Alan Moore, but they're not bad either. This particular volume might be the best of the four in that they are the most 'stand-alone' of the stories (and it doesn't hurt having Brian Azzarello working on it - probably the best of the authors roped into the project). They are also the two characters I most wanted more background on from the original series, so it is a doubly excellent pairing.

Well collected but not very original - at least to me. Most of the stories and examples contained are ones I've been exposed to before.

Excellent companion piece that lends depth and flavor to the film.
