  • Superman - Action Comics. by Morrison, Grant.

Part of the DC reboot - hard to judge where the story is going but not grievously and offensively filled with needless alterations to tradition either. All in all a good compromise.

Highbrow concept (good) ruined by highbrow execution (bad).

The idea of taking a historical, realistic turn with the Superman mythos intrigued me, i.e. portraying "Smallville' not as an abstract rural area but an actual plains town during the depression, psychologically investing Clark Kent with the appropriate country mouse/city mouse fears and insecurities.

Unfortunately the author spends far to much time on his own characters - a worldly photographer as a friend and foil for Clark, a naughty nurse pal for Lois - to make the story truly enjoyable.

An easy, enjoyable Superman read that does not require an extensive knowledge of the character's history to be enjoyable. The only quibble is with the (once again) re-imagined death scene of Pa Kent, which has been overdone to the point of exhaustion. One nearly expects him to kick off somewhere in every comic for a hackneyed emotional jolt.

Best of the Rebirth titles, which is low praise, but one must start somewhere. Interesting and timely MacGuffin, no intrusive politics, and no need to shove other superheroes in every issue makes for a good read; oddly phrased internal monologues interrupt the flow and drop it down a notch.

Mormons, Secession and lost gold, all spun into a capable thriller, albeit one that felt a little sluggish compared to previous books. Streamlining the plot by removing one or two set pieces might have improved the pace.

The second book I've (unwittingly) read by Nickels, and one plagued with the same problems as the first - atrocious fact checking and editing.
Misstating the construction date for City Hall by two decades?
Captioning a photo in an AIDS hospice as being taken circa 1980 - before AIDS was discovered?
Additionally, far to many of the photos are so repetitive in content that the book feels more like a 'friends of the author' vanity publication* than an accurate or necessary historical review.

While the photos were interesting and the historical bits were enlightening, far to many of the captions were unimportant puff-pieces from the author herself or blindly repeated, un-criticized, self-serving commentary from old publications.
