Notes:
One of the larger of the cheap lodging houses in the city, "Mother" Day's was situated on North Front Street, near Noble Street. The three-storey brick building had space for as many as 165 men per night (women were not allowed). Mrs. Day (who became Mrs. Somerville on her marriage) was a pioneer in the lodging house business, catering to the many longshoremen who worked on the nearby waterfront.
