Newspaper engraving of the riots which took place in Southwark on the night of July 7th., 1844.  During the summer of '44, Philadelphia was plagued by a series of riots called the Nativist American Riots, also known as the Philadelphia Prayer Riots and the Bible Riots. The riots were the result of rising anti-catholic sentiment at the growing population of Irish Catholic immigrants.
