General Israel Putnam was an American army General and a member of the Sons of Liberty. He was recognized for his role in the Battle of Bunker Hill during the American Revolutionary War.
The engraving is probably based on a painting attributed to Salem artist Samuel Blyth (Blythe), 1744-1795 who was a heraldic engraver and pastelist, and brother of Benjamin Blyth.
