George Washington was a hero of the American Revolution long before he became the country’s first president in 1789. Washington's image was recognizable by his contemporaries, partly because of how often it was painted, engraved, and reprinted in publications throughout the colonies. Washington’s face became a symbol of unity, strength of character and leadership during the Revolutionary War and in the years that followed.
