Medieval ManuscriptsItem Info
Item No: mca1260352
Additional Title: Book of Hours, use of Rouen
Script:
Bastarda
Language: Latin
Folio Number: f. 35v
Source: Rare Book Department
Notes: Presentation in the Temple
Notes: This manuscript has been dated to ca. 1500.
Notes: This miniature precedes None of the Hours of the Virgin. The Presentation in the Temple is the typical iconography for this Hour. What is unusual here are the inscriptions. While the inscription on the bottom frame comes directly from the Hail Mary (or "Ave Maria"), the top frame of the miniature reads as follows: "LVDOVICVS REX FRANCORVM BONVS OPERATVS" (Louis King of the Franks, Good Work). This may be a reference to King Louis XII (f. 1498-1515) and the royal affiliation of the original owners, Quinard of Languedoc and Venot de Noisy of Burgundy and Lyonnais, who have been identified by a coat of arms in the manuscript on fol. 37v.
