Medieval ManuscriptsItem Info
Language: Latin
Folio Number: innerbinding - f. 1r
Source: Rare Book Department
Notes: Inside of front cover and first page
Notes: This opening begins the Expositions on the Psalms written by St. Augustine (354-430), bishop of the north African city of Hippo and one of the Doctors of the Church. In the twelfth century, the manuscript belonged to the Castilian Abbey of Santa Maria de Benevivere. The inside of the front cover, shown here, includes the bookplates of three later owners.
The manuscript is unusual for having its original binding of pigskin over oak boards. The place where the clasp was once affixed is still visible near the left edge.
