A Library Card Keeps You Movin’ and Groovin’

By Clare F. RSS Mon, September 9, 2019

Thanks to the Free Library’s huge selection of digital media, most of our patrons know that their library cards gain them access to books, music, movies, and more that travel with them—on the trolley, around the neighborhood, even across the country.

But did you know that your library card also unlocks a world of resources that actually help you stay moving and active? That’s right: a Free Library card can bring you access to physical health . . . and better moves for the dance floor!

Today, we’re continuing our celebration of Library Card Sign-Up Month by exploring a few of the ways your library card can keep you movin’ and groovin’!

Zumba your way to a more energetic you—for free! This five-DVD collection of Zumba workouts includes both Spanish and English instructions.

Enjoy Fairmount Park with one of our hiking backpacks! These three special backpacks each contain a book of camp songs with lyrics and music, a field guide to trees in the Philadelphia region, a map of Wissahickon Valley, a map of Fairmount Park with a list of activities, a pamphlet showing images of birdhouses designed by artists and a map of their location, the names of birds with their calls, and a Wilderness Explorers magnifying glass.

We also have a significant array of birding backpacks, which include birding resources and a pair of binoculars. Get out into the great outdoors—whether a nearby park or your own backyard—and learn about our feathered friends while staying active.

Learn a form of simplified tai chi that takes only six minutes a day.

Yoga can be intimidating—and even difficult—for the beginner. Peggy Cappy’s DVD Easy Yoga: The Secret to Strength & Balance is a gentle and slow-paced introduction for all ages, while Kimberly Carson’s book Relax into Yoga for Seniors offers a six-week, step-by-step guide specifically for older practitioners interested in a safe and effective entry to this practice.

Aerobic fitness is a key component to staying healthy. Check out one of our aerobic fitness DVDs for some helpful instruction on your own schedule.

Enjoy a private dance class in the comfort of your own home! Learn to waltz, foxtrot, salsa, and more from a pro.

Get your little ones jiving, learning, and having fun—all at the same time. Try Dance with the Animals, an interactive DVD that teaches about our fellow animals while encouraging creative movement, or expose your child to Western dance forms like ballet and tap with Dancing for Kids!
