  • Orphan train / by Kline, Christina Baker,
    ★★★★★

Reviewed by LaBae D on Jan 16, 2015

A MUST-READ and not solely because of it's 2015 One Book One Philadelphia status. This historical fiction novel is relatable to all those who can't seem to fathom why certain things happen and for what purpose. The story intricately weaves together two women's lives- similiar context albeit seperate generations- who happen to be orphans. This piece is centered on resilience of the spirit and places sufferage and distress in context with the power of love and survival. What do you carry with you? What do you leave behind?

The story reads in color and almost seems 3-D (or is it just me:)).

  • Burial Rites by Kent, Hannah
    ★★★★★

Reviewed by Teresa G on Dec 29, 2014

The problem with reading historical fiction based on true events is that no matter how hard you hope for a different ending there is no way to go back and change the facts.  Burial Rites is just such a book.  Author Hannah Kent has created a sympathetic and believable character in Agnes Magnusdodottir.  When first introduced, Agnes seems a hardened and soulless woman.  But over time as she awaits execution her story unfolds so that by the end of the book all those who have grown to know her are convinced of her innocence in the crime for which she is being executed.  Set in Iceland in the early 19th century, Burial Rites is not only the story of a horrific crime, but is also the story of a way of life.

The online photo essay that compliments the book makes the story of Agnes Magnusdottir even more haunting.
