Notes: This page contains the beginning of Matthew from an eleventh-century Gospel book. The decorated letter and first four lines of the text are, however, much later. These were probably added in the fifteenth century to replace texts from damaged or missing pages. This may have happened when the book was at the Carthusian Monastery at Sirck, the ex libris of which appears below the text, written in a fifteenth-century hand. The inscription at the top of the page is the signature of a later owner, Graf von Villers of Sapuch, who owned the book in 1820.
