Antiphonary
Medieval ManuscriptsItem Info
Language: Latin
Folio Number: 1r
Original Year/Month/Day: June 1548
Source: Rare Book Department
Notes: Dated and localized in colophon at the end of the volume.
Notes: Initial U with illuminated boarder
Notes: This initial begins the antiphon for the feast of St. Andrew (Nov. 30).
The colophon at the end of the manuscript provides the information that this antiphonary was made at the Monastery of Belém in 1548 at the request of John III of Portugal, who gave the book to the College of St. Jerome. Lewis E 221 and 222 both contain the same colophon and so must be part of a set of liturgical manuscripts that constituted the donation.
