This opening contains the Suffrages to St. John the Baptist and St. Stephen Protomartyr, both illustrated by portraits of the saints. St. John, on the left, wears an animal skin as a sign of his time in the desert. Beside him is the Lamb of God, a reference to saint's announcment: "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world." (John 1:29). Opposite John is St. Stephen, known as St. Stephen Protomartyr because he was the first martyr of the faith. The stone on his forehead refers to his martyrdom. The Acts of the Apostles relate that he was stoned to death while preaching the Word of Christ (Acts 7:58).
