Reel Perspectives: Stories from the African Diaspora – Sugar Cane Alley
Walnut Street West Library
Join us for the launch of Reel Perspectives: Stories from the African Diaspora, a monthly film series celebrating the richness, struggles, and triumphs of Black life across the globe. Each screening is followed by an open conversation where we reflect on themes of identity, resilience, and community.
Our first feature, Sugar Cane Alley (1983, dir. Euzhan Palcy, 103 min, French with English subtitles), is set in 1930s Martinique. The film follows a young boy whose grandmother sacrifices everything to give him an education beyond the sugar cane fields. Poignant and powerful, it sheds light on colonialism, family bonds, and the pursuit of a better future.
