Adults CAN Learn to READ

By Rachel H. RSS Fri, March 25, 2022

Would you like to teach adults to read? There are many people who need this help and very few places where they can get it.

The Free Library is dedicated to advancing literacy for all. To this end, the Library's Languages and Learning Center has partnered with "It's Never Too Late," a Philadelphia-based grassroots initiative dedicated to helping adult non-readers achieve the basic skills needed to cope with the text in their everyday lives.

In a further development, It's Never Too Late, sponsored by the Friends of the Kingsessing Library, has formed "Adults CAN Learn to READ."

The Languages and Learning Center together with the founder of It's Never Too Late, Jo Ann Fishburn, invite you to learn how to teach adult beginning reading classes. We propose to extend this tried and true curriculum to more learners throughout Philadelphia and beyond.

Over many years, Ms. Fishburn has created a toolkit for use in teaching adult basic literacy which is available on her website. You will also find a four-part video featuring some of her students reflecting on the program.
