Literacy in Early Learning Spaces

Through a generous investment from the Vanguard Strong Start for Kids Program™, the Free Library of Philadelphia is initiating a new project, Literacy in Early Learning Spaces, in 44 childcare programs across seven neighborhoods throughout the city.

Literacy in Early Learning Spaces is a three-year project focused on literacy and language development in children from birth through 5 years old, taking place in STAR 1 & 2 child care programs around the city. This pilot will model supporting early learning programs to help children with the early literacy skills they need to be ready to start school and learn how to read.

Support through this program includes:

  • Free Book Nooks with books & materials for babies, toddlers, and preschoolers
  • Professional Development for child care staff to support early literacy and language development
  • Special Family Events
  • Support and training for dual-language learners and their families
  • Ongoing on-site support from an Early Childhood Literacy Specialist

This program begins in the 19141 and 19148 zip code areas of Philadelphia. In 2019 and 2020, we will open additional slots for STAR 1 & 2 Childcare Providers in 19120, 19121, 19133, 19139, and 19143 zip codes.
