Born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Edwidge Danticat spent most of early years with her aunt and uncle
and then at the age of 12 moved to Brooklyn to be with her parents. She began writing not long
after, and since then her essays and stories have appeared in numerous periodicals. She is a
recipient of a James Michener Fellowship and awards from Seventeen and Essence, and Granta named
her one of the twenty "Best of American Novelists" in 1996. Her collection of Haitian stories,
Krik? Krak!, was a finalist for the 1995 National Book Award, and she received a Pushcart
Prize for short fiction. The Dew Breaker is her latest novel.
