Discovered by Agnes de Mille, Judith Jamison became a member of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in 1965 where she danced for 15 years; she was later asked to become artistic director of the Dance Theater by Alvin Ailey himself. A noted authority on modern dance and an advocate for education in the arts, Ms. Jamison is the recipient of many awards including a Kennedy Center Honor, and most recently, President Bush presented her with a National Medal of Arts.
