A professor emeritus of History at Princeton University, James McPherson won the Pulitzer Prize for Battle Cry of Freedom: The Civil War Era, his single-volume treatment of the Civil War that set a benchmark for scholarship in the field. He is the author of nearly twenty additional books, each focused on a particular aspect of the Civil War. Harold Holzer is one of the country's leading authorities on Abraham Lincoln and the political culture of the Civil War era. A prolific writer, he has written or edited more than thirty-five books. He was awarded the National Humanities Medal by President Bush in 2008. Hearts Touched by Fire offers first-hand accounts of the war’s great battles written by the men who planned, fought, and witnessed them.
