Born in Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), Alexander McCall Smith has led a distinguished career as a legal scholar, and more recently, as the best-selling author of The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency novels. The series received two Booker Judge's Special Recommendations, and Oscar-winning director Anthony Minghella has snapped up the film rights. A resident of Edinburgh (and professor at the university), McCall shares a neighborhood with J. K. Rowling (of Harry Potter fame).
