Joseph J. Ellis is a best-selling author and distinguished chronicler of early American history. His book The Passionate Sage: The Character and Legacy of John Adams was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize, and American Sphinx: The Character of Thomas Jefferson won the National Book Award in 1997.
