He is the author of In the Heart of the Sea: The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex (a bestseller and winner of the National Book Award) and Revenge of the Whale: The True Story of the Whaleship Essex, both recounting the gruesome 19th century tragedy that inspired Melville's Moby Dick.
