Considered to be one of the most important writers of the modern postwar era, Doris Lessing has enjoyed a long and successful career as a novelist, short story writer, and essayist. She has traveled widely in geographical, social, political, psychological, and literary terms, and her wide-ranging literary appetite is considered one of the defining characteristics of her work. The Grandmothers, a collection of four novellas, addresses the strange relationships between mothers and sons, race relations in London over the past few decades, and the veneer of middle-class morality.
