Max Cleland is a decorated Vietnam veteran who, after returning from his tour of duty and recovering from his extensive injuries at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, became Georgia's youngest Secretary of State, head of the Veterans Administration, and, later, a United States Senator. When he was tarred as "unpatriotic" in a bloody smear campaign engineered by Karl Rove, Cleland--a lifetime advocate for soldiers' rights--was pushed to the edge of despair. Senator Ted Kennedy calls Cleland's memoir "A true profile in courage for our time."
