Elder statesman of the environmental movement and author of more than 200 scientific papers, James Lovelock is the originator of the Gaia Hypothesis, which postulates that Earth functions as a living organism. In The Vanishing Face of Gaia, Lovelock argues that the earth is lurching toward a permanent hot state much more quickly than most scientists think; in response he calls for aggressive preparation in order for humanity to survive the consequences.
