Grammy Award winner Jill Scott grew up in North Philadelphia. She was discovered by The Root's drummer Amir, who invited her to perform with the band on "You Got Me," a Top 40 pop hit in 1999. Her platinum debut, Who is Jill Scott?, wowed the music world with its mix of jazz, R&B, hip-hop, and spoken word; Grammy, Image, and Soul Train nominations followed. Experience: Jill Scott 826+ appeared the following summer. This year, her album Beautifully Human was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best R & B Album, and her song "Cross My Mind”"won for Best Urban/Alternative Performance. The Moments, the Minutes, the Hours is her first collection of poetry.
