Born in Somalia and raised Muslim, Ayaan Hirsi Ali is the former Dutch politician who became the target of terrorists for her fierce, public criticisms of Islam. Forced into hiding after the murder of filmmaker Theo van Gogh, her collaborator on Submission, a documentary film about the oppression of Muslim women, Ali has continued to advocate for women's rights in Islamic cultures and to speak out against some Muslims' disinclination to think critically about Islam. She is the author of The Caged Virgin: An Emancipation Proclamation for Women and Islam. Her new book, Infidel, is a memoir of growing up amid revolution and religious restraint.
