October Revolution!: International Ideas of Avant-Garde Art
Book Display, October 2025 -- The political upheavals of the early 20th century found their aesthetic counterpart in the idea of the avant-garde. From Malevich's white squares to Duchamp's ready-mades, to Surrealist photographers, the avant-garde names a movement of movements that radically critiqued and transformed the foundations of creative practice. Fiercely resisted by conservative forces in its time, the avant-garde is now an established foundation of global contemporary art. Its practices have been echoed, critiqued and transformed in turn as they passed from European cities to Black and Feminist movements in the US and in the post-colonial national traditions of the Global South. These books invite patrons to consider the role that art could still play in reshaping our world.
