Image of a small group of (mostly) students, gathering for the first Earth Day celebration in Philadelphia, on Belmont Plateau, Fairmount Park, on April 22, 1970. Earth Day "teach-ins" were held worldwide that day, to advocate for environmental protection of the planet. The rally in Philadelphia was attended by about 30,000 people. Speakers included Ralph Nader, Sen. Edmund Muskie, and poet Allen Ginsberg. Earth Day became an annual event, promoting environmental education and activism. This color photographic print was taken by Philadelphia photographer Dr. Harry Drasin.
