Notes:

Image of the audience attending the first concert of the Philadelphia Orchestra's second summer season at the Robin Hood Dell, on July 8, 1931.  This photograph was published the next day in the Philadelphia Evening Public Ledger.  Alexander Smallens, the orchestra's assistant conductor, was the conductor for the concert.  As evident in this image, these outdoor concerts were already very popular by 1931. Of note is the presence of trees in the seating areas.  Later renovations removed the trees, for a better audience experience. The 8-week outdoor season in Fairmount Park has remained a staple of the orchestra's summer schedule.  It is not known if the visible cropping lines drawn on the picture were intended for the photograph's original 1931 appearance in the Ledger, or for its later use in other publications in the 1930s, e.g., in an August 1934 issue of Musical America.  Photographic print, 35.5 x 28 cm, 7/8/1931.
