Diesen beyden Ehegatten, als namlich Joseph Stauffer und seiner ehelichen Haus=Frau \ Catharina eine gebohrne Ackerin ist ein Sohn zur Welt gebohren, Namens \ Henrich Stauffer \ im Jahr unsers HErrn JEsu 1802 den 13ten Tag Aprill um [blank] Uhr im Zeichen der Jungfrau

GOTT gebe Gnad, Kraft und Stärke, daß dieser Henrich Stauffer in der Furcht zum Lob und Preiß des Herrn, möge aufwachsen und zunehmen in \ großer Begierde der vernünftigen lautern Milch, das ursprüngliche Heil der Seelen zu suchen, nach abgelegtem Glaubensbekäntniß und Erkäntniß der Sünde durch wahre Reu und \ Buße, vor der Christlichen Gemeinde, zur geistlichen Wiedergeburt der heiligen Taufe befördert, und von [blank] Prediger und Diener des \ Worts, nach Christi Befehl, Matth, 29, v. 19. getauft, und in den Gnadenbund GOttes einverleibt worden. Diese [blank] ist, als ein Glied \ in die Gemeinschaft der Heiligen, durch das Bad der Wiedergeburt und Erneuerung des Heiligen Geistes, wie St. Paulus lehret, Titum 3, v. 5, 6, 7. [blank] \ ist auf= und angenommen worden, den [blank] ten Tag 18[blank] und durch den wahren Glauben an unseren Erlöser JEsu Christo, des so theuer erworbenen Verdienstes, \ der himmlischen Freuden, und der ewigen Seligkeit Erben eingesetzet. Mithin vergiß nicht wie der Apostel Paulus, Col. 1. v. 12, 14. die Pflicht beschreibet. Saget Dank \ dem Vater der uns tüchtig gemacht hat zum Erbtheil der Heiligen im Licht, u. s. w.

Dieser Henrich Stauffer ist gebohren und getauft in America, im Staat Pennsylvanien in Lancaster \ Caunty, in Warwick Taunschip.

Wann wir kaum gebohren werden, Ist vom ersten Lebenstritt Bis ins kühle Grab der Erden Nur ein kurzgemeß’ner Schritt. \ Ach mit jedem Augenblick! \ Gehet unsre Kraft zurück, Und wir sind mit jedem Jahre, Allzureiff \ zur Todtenbahre; Und wer weiß in welcher Stunde, Uns die lezte Stimme weckt: Denn \ GOtt hat’s mit seinem Munde, Keinem Menschen noch entdeckt. \ Wer sein Haus nun wohl bestellt. Geht mit Freuden \ aus der Welt. Da die Sicherheit hingegen; \ Ewigs Sterben kan erregen.

Ich bin getauft, ich steh im Bunde, \ Durch meine Tauf mit meinem Gott, \ So sprech’ ich stets mit frohem Munde, \ in Creutz, in Trübsal, Angst und Noth, \ Ich bin getauft, deß' freu \ ich mich, die Freude \ bleibet ewig= \ lich.
 

Translation:

To these two married people namely Joseph Stauffer and his lawful wife Catharina, a born Ackerin, a son was born into the world, named Henrich Stauffer, in the year of our Lord Jesus 1802, on the 13th of April at [blank] o’clock in the sign of Virgo.

May God give grace, power and strength so that this Henrich Stauffer may grow up in the spirit of praise and honor of the LORD, and eagerly consume the true milk, to search for the original salvation of the souls after his profession of faith and realization of sin through sincere repentance. Before the Christian congregation he was brought to the spiritual rebirth of the holy baptism, and he was baptized by [blank] preacher and servant of the Word, according to the command of Christ, Matthew 28:19, and he was included into God’s covenant of grace. This [blank] was, through the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost, as St. Paul teaches, Titus 3: 5, 6, 7, admitted as a member of the community of the holy. [blank] was admitted and accepted on the [blank] day 18[blank] and through the true faith in our savior Jesus Christ is taking part in the dearly bought rewards of heavenly joys and the eternal blessedness of the earth. Do not forget the way in which the apostle Paul, Colossians 1:12, 14, described the duty to give thanks to the Father, who has made you fit to share in the inheritance of the holy ones in light, etc.

Scarcely born into the world, it is only a short measured pace from the first step to the cool grave in the earth. O with every moment! Our strength diminishes, and with every year we grow more ripe for the bier. And who knows in what hour the final voice will awaken us, because God has not revealed this to anybody yet. Who tends to his house will depart from the world with joy. Because surety, in contrast, can provoke eternal death.

I am baptized, and when I die, how can the cool grave hurt me? I know my fatherland and legacy that I will have with God in Heaven. After death, Heaven’s garment of joy and celebration is prepared for me.

I am baptized, I stand united with my God through my baptism. I therefore always speak joyfully in hardship, sadness, fear and need. I am baptized, that’s a joy for me. The joy lasts eternally.

Notes:

Hand-drawn; hand-colored; hand-lettered; printed form. The main text in Fraktur within a heart is in the center of the document. Two verses in Fraktur are in small hearts in the lower corners. The hearts are surrounded by undulating, flowering vines, stems of tulips and other flowers, and rosettes. The entire document is framed by a decorative border.

This is the only known printed edition by Benjamin Grimler. Only four extant copies are known.
