Geburts= und Tauf=Schein. \ Diesen beyden Ehegatten als: \ Johannes Bähr und seiner ehelichen Haus= \ frau Annah eine geborne Mudhardin ist eine \ Tochter zur Welt gebohren, den 3ten Tag September \ im Jahr unsers Herrn, 1837. diese Tochter ist \ gebohren in Colebroockdale Taunschip Berks \ Caunty, im Staat Pennsylvanien in Nord=America; \ Und erhielt durch die Heil. Taufe den Namen \ Lewaina den 7ten Tag November im Jahr unses \ Herrn 1837. \ Von dem Ehrw. Hrn. C. Miller. \ Die Tauf=Zeugen waren Ridscherd Donn \ und deßen Ehefrau Elisabeth.

Birth and Baptismal Certificate
To these two married people, namely Johannes Bähr and his lawful wife Annah born Mudhardin a daughter was born into the world: the 3rd day September in the year of the Lord 1837. This daughter was born in Colebrookdale township Berks county in the state of Pennsylvania in North America; and she received through the Holy Baptism the name Lewaina the 7th day November in the year of our Lord 1837. By the honorable Hen. C. Miller. The sponsors were Richard Donn and his wife Elisabeth.

I am baptized, I stand united with my God through my baptism. I therefore always speak joyfully in hardship, sadness, fear and need. I am baptized, that’s a joy for me. The joy lasts eternally.

I am baptized, and when I die, how can the cool grave hurt me? I know my fatherland and legacy that I will have with God in Heaven. After death, Heaven’s garment of joy and celebration is prepared for me.

I am baptized in your name, God, Father, Son and Holy Ghost. I am counted as one of your seeds, to a people that you blessed. O! What fortune for me! Lord, let me be worthy of it!

Scarcely born into the world, it is only a short measured pace from the first step to the cool grave in the earth. O with every moment!
Our strength diminishes, and we grow ripe for the bier.

And who knows in what hour the final voice will awaken us, because God has not revealed this to anybody yet. Who tends to his house will depart from the world with joy. Because surety, in contrast, can provoke eternal death.

Hand-drawn; hand-colored; hand-lettered. The main text in Fraktur is enclosed in an arched frame. Two verses are in smaller frames in the top corners. A winged angel head, adorned with a heart, is in the top center. Two angels, depicted in profile, one holding a bird and one holding a wreath, flank the text. Two potted tulips with birds are in the bottom corners.
The two verses in center left and right columns are by Johan Friedrich Starck. English translations were printed in his Daily Hand Book for Days of Rejoicing and of Sorrow (Philadelphia: I. Kohler, 1855). The third verse in the center is by Johann Jacob Rambach. (see Weiser catalog, p. xxv)
