The Masoretic Text is the authoritative Hebrew of the Jewish Tanakh, traditionally written in the margins around the scriptural Hebrew. This elaborate manuscript reflects the history and traditions of Spanish Jewry in the fifteenth century. Although written in Portugal after the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492, the micrography (the borders of minute Hebrew letters shaped into patterns and pictures) of the Masoretic Text and the “carpet pages” (like many Spanish Jewish texts, influenced by decorated Qur’ans) are from the Spanish tradition.
