The Whitman Branch of the Free Library opened on January 24, 1977. The neighborhood of Whitman and its library branch derive their names from the nearby Walt Whitman Bridge. This ca. 1977 interior view is of the children's room. Visible on the left-hand wall is one of the four paintings of scenes of South Philadelphia, by well-known Philadelphia watercolorist Howard N. Watson.
