Psalter

Item Info

Item No: mca1810072
Additional Title: Psalter
Script: Gothic bookhand
Language: Latin
Folio Number: f. 7v
Source: Rare Book Department
Notes: Initial C, beginning Psalm 9
Notes: This initial begins Psalm 9, "Confitebor tibi domine in toto corde meo..." (I will give praise to thee, O Lord, with my whole heart). Although not marking one of the major divisions of the psalter, this crowned woman adds a personal and human touch to the psalter's devotions. Many other initials in the manuscript are inhabited by other women and men, both secular and religious, as if to represent all of the faithful. The abstracted vegetal motifs in the border decoration are characteristic of a group of manuscripts produced in the Ghent-Bruges region of Flanders, or modern-day Belgium. This group has been identified by scholars as the "Tweede" group based on shared stylistic affinities.
Notes: This manuscript has been dated to ca. 1270.
