Notes: This leaf is from a set of thirty-one leaves that were cut from a single manuscript that once comprised a complete Bible.
This page begins the first epistle of Peter, which was thought to have been written by Peter when he was bishop of Rome. The historiated initial P depicts St. Peter with his attributes, keys and a cross. The keys refer to Matthew 16:19, in which Christ tells Peter that he will give him the keys of heaven. The cross that he holds refers to his manner of death, for, like Christ, he was crucified.
