Notes: Opening with a Benedictine monk before an altar
Notes: This opening begins a series of prayers to be said before confession. The Benedictine monk (probably the original owner) kneels before an altar, literally enacting on the page his own reading of the prayers that follow. Although his identity remains a mystery, we know that he was active at the abbey of St. Amand, near the French town of Valenciennes. This manuscript was produced by the same scriptorium that produced a book of hours, also in the Free Library (Lewis E 109), that bears a colophon stating that it was written at the abbey in 1537. An inscription on f. 146v dates this prayer book to September 22, 1538.
