Item No: mcai280011
Additional Title: Breviary (or Psalter?)
Script:
Rotunda
Language: Latin
Folio Number: front
Source: Rare Book Department
Notes: Initial D with the Holy Trinity
Notes: This initial begins Psalm 109, "Dixit Dominus Domino meo sede a dextris meis ..." (The Lord said to my Lord sit at my right hand) and marks the last major division of the Psalter according to the schedule of the Divine Office. The opening words of the psalm were generally interpreted as referring to the persons of the Trinity, which explains part of the iconography of this initial. The landscape below includes further references to the rest of the psalm. The architecture of the city below extends into a landscape that continues almost infinitely into the background, giving a bird's-eye view of a world that extends beyond the sea. The placement of the Trinity above such a landscape may refer to the last verses of the psalm: "He shall judge among nations, he shall fill ruins; he shall crush the heads in the land of the many."
