Gothic bookhand
Language: Latin and French
Folio Number: 160r
Source: Rare Book Department
Notes: St. Geneviève
Notes: This page contains the Suffrage for St. Geneviève and is illustrated with a portrait of the saint. St. Geneviève was a fifth-century martyr who died in Paris and subsequently became the city's patron saint. In this miniature, she holds her attribute, a candlestick, which is continually being snuffed out by a little devil and miraculously relit by an angel. The appearance of St. Geneviève in the Suffrages as well as her saint's day being written in gold in the calendar helps to determine that this book of hours was made for Paris use.
