Notes: This small prayer book was written in German rather than Latin, as was usual for religious texts. The inclusion of local Cologne saints in the calendar helps to locate where this manuscript was produced. The dialect of the German used here, which is very close to Dutch, as well as the use of the vernacular itself, suggests a Netherlandic influence for the manuscript. Devotional manuscripts produced in the Netherlands tended to be written in the vernacular, a consequence of the spiritual movement popular in the region known as the Devotio moderna (Modern or New Devotion). Because of the movement's emphasis on personal devotion practiced through pious reading and writing, many devotional texts were translated into the language spoken and read by the majority of its followers.
