Medieval ManuscriptsItem Info
Item No: mca0891041
Additional Title: Book of Hours, use of Mons
Script:
Gothic bookhand
Language: Latin
Folio Number: f. 104r
Source: Rare Book Department
Notes:
Lewis E 89 was previously titled "Book of hours, use of Châlons" but in December 2016 the title was amended to the correct liturgical use.
Notes: Initial D
Notes: This initial begins Vespers of the Office of the Dead, which was included at the end of nearly every book of hours. These prayers were recited in order to lessen the time that deceased friends and relatives had to spend in Purgatory. Unlike many fifteenth-century books of hours that were extensively illustrated, this four-line letter is one of only four illuminated initials in this modest manuscript.
